Course Outline:

Groundwater Treatment-Intro

This introduction will discuss what groundwater is and what regulations require it to be treated as well as the common contaminants and methods of treatment.  A brief discussion on piloting will be included.

Iron & Manganese Removal

This session will cover reducing iron and manganese using oxidation, detention and filtration as well as challenges when influenced by additional contaminants.  It will wrap up with discussing piloting for Fe/Mn reduction.

Dealing with Water Hardness

This session will cover softening chemistry for hardness removal and using lime and soda ash, pellet softening and other methods while defining hardness, discussing the general precipitation reactions and treatment processes.  Process flow schemes as process components will be discussed.

Reducing Arsenic

This session will address the background, treatment and processes for arsenic reduction.  It will address the various forms and occurrences of this contaminant and its current regulations.   The common methods of removal of oxidation, coagulation, co-precipitation and adsorption as well as some alternative methods like ion exchange, lime softening and reverse osmosis.  A brief discussion of which application is appropriate will also be included.

Radionuclide Treatment

This session will include the background on radium, radon and uranium.  The maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) and occurrences in the U.S. will be included.  Ion exchange, HMO feed, RO/NF and air stripping will be discussed and several case studies will be presented.

Removing Ammonia from Groundwater

This session will include defining ammonia, its regulations and treatment process options as well as the pros and cons of each method.  The treatment processes of aeration, ion-exchange, RO, chlorination and nitrification will be discussed.

Nitrate Reduction in Drinking Water

This session will address the regulatory limits, health concerns and several nitrate reduction methods including ion exchange, reverse osmosis, distillation and biological treatment approaches.

PFOA/PFOS in Drinking Water

This session will discuss the health concerns and several methods and treatment approaches.  Several case studies discussing methods of treatment will be presented.
